Therapy with Beatriz

Hello, I’m Beatriz (She/Her/Ella).

Therapy for me transcends a mere transactional experience. I am committed to providing a supportive and empathetic environment, ready to listen to your pain, hurt, anger, and joy at a pace that aligns with your readiness to process them. My goal is to cultivate a brave space where you can explore your past, present, and future.

My background has equipped me with diverse perspectives, stemming from being a first-generation master’s graduate, a member of the Army National Guard, and my Mexican/Salvadorian heritage. I continuously strive to remain aware of the gaps in my knowledge regarding your culture and identities, and I am dedicated to learning and understanding your unique experiences.

What Do You Do To Continue Learning And Building Competencies As A Provider?

Being a therapist is a continuous path of learning. We have courses we have to complete every 2 years that surround suicide prevention, ethics issues, cultural competency, and other trainings focused on the field of practice. I currently participate in consultation groups for Parts & Memory and IFS to continue my education.

What Made You Become A Therapist?

I have always been fascinated by people’s stories, journeys, and a curiosity to know more. I came across a class called human sexuality in college and learned there was a career in Marriage and Family Therapy. I took more classes about marriage and family therapy and just knew I was in the right place.

I have also had negative and traumatizing therapy experiences where my feelings were minimized, dismissed, misunderstood, and I felt unsafe with an unreliable ally to my identities and values. These experiences made me passionate to strive to be a professional and ethical therapist.

Activism, Social Justice, and Community Service

Since high school I have always enjoyed volunteering in my community. I have volunteered at the public library, Sunrise Hospital Children Center, and The Cupcake Girls as an advocate. To this day I participate still in my community by helping in food pantries, community clean ups, or other opportunities that show up.

As a therapist, I believe that activism and social justice is a foundational pillar in how we perform as therapists. People’s concerns always intersect politics, social systems, and environmental influences. This means acknowledging how white supremacy, imperialism, systemic oppression, state-sanctioned violence, and colonization has greatly impacted how we are taught to do therapy and are pressured to do therapy. I am in a continuous journey in learning, decolonizing my therapy and increasing my voice in spaces to be an agent of resistance to these dehumanizing processes. In session I will never impose my personal beliefs, but I do not allow racism to be normalized in our therapeutic space. My allyship to you extends beyond the office space as I make time to involve myself in local organizations, protest, boycotts, and actions to combat oppressive systems.

Military Service

I served in the Nevada Army National Guard for 12 years. I worked as a culinary specialist who reached Staff Sergeant. In my time in the guard, I was deployed to Poland. As a veteran, I understand that service members are not shielded from toxic power dynamics, sexual harassment/assault, racism, trauma, and feeling used/disposed of. Transitioning from a service member to entering the civilian world can be a hard transition while also losing access to a large community and access to resources. My time in service provided me access to an education, resources, and character growth, but it also left its own scars. Many service members enlist to leave harmful spaces, seeking access to education we could not reach on our own, stability, and at times purpose. Even so, through education I have also learned how our military has played a significant role in the oppression of others and the oppression we feel at home.
